What Is Pickleball? A Beginner's Guide for Shimoga
3 October 2026
Pickleball is a paddle sport that anyone can pick up in an afternoon. It is played on a small court with a light plastic ball full of holes. It mixes ideas from tennis, badminton and table tennis.
Where it comes from
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island in Washington, USA. Three friends wanted a game their families could play together. Today it is played in many countries, including India.
How the game looks
- The court is the size of a doubles badminton court: 20 feet by 44 feet.
- Players hit the ball over a low net with a solid paddle. There are no strings.
- You can play singles or doubles. Doubles is the most common.
Why it is easy to start
- The court is small, so you do not have to run far.
- The ball is light and slow, so you can rally in your first game.
- The rules are short. You can learn them in five minutes.
- All ages and fitness levels can play together.
It is a social game
Most people play doubles, so you talk, laugh and meet people. That is a big reason players keep coming back.
